The Wide Awakes were a grassroots political movement that began in 1860, made up of young abolitionists who rallied in support of Abraham Lincoln's presidential campaign. Wearing signature oilcloth capes and carrying lanterns, they organized massive marches to call for the end of slavery.
In 2020, a group of artists and cultural workers revived the spirit of the Wide Awakes as a creative movement for liberation, democracy, and justice. We are still Wide Awake, and we won’t go back to sleep.
